Neon signs

Using EL wire it is possible to make all sorts of shapes and designs that light up, which a choice of bright colours. Download our templates, and take a look at our own creations, and how we made them, for inspiration.

Our neon signs are self-standing using a small wooden base. You can also make neon signs by gluing the EL wire to foam board, cardboard or wood.

To make signs like ours, you will need

EL wire. 1m lengths of EL wire, each with its own battery pack. You can find packs of EL wire on Amazon. To allow your signs to be run individually, avoid packs where multiple strands run off the same individual battery pack.

Galvanised garden wire for the supporting metal frame. Thicker, stronger, wire will hold its shape better but will also be harder to shape and bend.

Nails and a hammer.

Small cable zip ties to hold the EL wire to the wire frame.

A glue gun for certain designs, to hold them to the base.

Wood glue, to hold the ends in the base.

A drill, and small (3mm) drill bit for wood, to make the holes in the base to hold the galvanised wire.

A block of wood at least 11.5cm long x 3cm wide x 1cm deep for base.

A4 (29cm x 21cm) flat piece of scrap wood to form wire frame shape.

A4 paper with wool or string if you are having a go at designing your own light.
